Cheap price with valuable contents, detailed descriptions for the sleep trains of worldwide, if you're a train fan, it should be recommended to you to have one.

On its 220 pages, the book explores the historical and current luxury trains as well as train stations with the help of many large format pictures. Weighing in at 5 pounds, and measuring 13" x 11", you certainly will not find yourself reading this book like a novel. Personally, I would have liked to see more modern pictures - some of them looked a little dated.Otherwise, it covers the most important trains, and provides some interesting pictures of the details.Written in 5 languages, English, German, French, Spanish and Italian, this book will be great for all kinds of coffee tables. The cover with the Swedish Royal Train is alone worth the price. Somebody who sees that book, would never guess it costs less than $20. I'd certainly recommend it to anybody I know. Even my friend who is a frequent luxury train traveler was impressed by the bang for the buck.

This is the best coffee table book that I have ever purchased. The pictures are very high quality and the writing is amazing. This is a conversation piece every time someone walks into my house!

If you're a VB programmer and want to automate Explorer, just somebody who wants to learn a [little] bit more about what's under the hood, or an advanced programmer who is willing to pay for a little push, this may be the book for you.If you are hardcore: This is not a great book (by almost every metric); I lament that, as a technical book, it does not [even] compare favorably to MS Press books such as Rogerson's now-semi-classic Inside COM (from three years ago) or [let alone] the great Ray Duncan's Adv. MSDOS Programming (from twelve years ago; ack!); it's a bad sign that MS Press can no longer deliver for such an important platform (esp. if they want to compete with the Mozilla platform where source is avail.). Roughly half the book is devoted to what is essentially web page development ([MS]HTML, scripting, [MS]DHTML) which is covered [better] in many other books; the *presentation* *is* oriented to development of applications with browser front-ends, but its a waste of space. The rest of the book is a subset of documentation and examples available at msdn.microsoft.com/workshop. Needless to say, there is no mention of cross-browser development issues and API's (e.g. NS plugin API or DOM compatibility). The redundancy in the book may be useful for getting started if you can spare the cash (to better see how the COM-bone connects to the registry-bone connects to the web-accessory-bone, etc.). Just remember that there are many powerfull API's (= things you can do, but arn't in the book) that are [poorly] documented elsewhere or not at all; see msdn and the relevant newsgroups. This book is a missed opportunity.

Whether you want to use the web browser control in your own program or automate a running instance of Internet Explorer this is an awesome book. To get the most out of some parts of this book you need to have at least a basic understanding of COM, but it does offer a brief introduction.

I've noticed a disturbing trend in MS books that I have recently read. Both this and "Programming ADO" have been written by support guys at MS who seem to have a reasonably broad handle on the subject matter, but not a very deep one. This book, in particular, teased me with the richness of the IE development environment without really drilling down. This would have been a better book if it was lighter on scripting (there are much better books out there for that) and really explored the IE interfaces (of which there are a ton) in depth. Having said that, If you are new to IE, then this book has some value - especially if you prefer books over MSDN documentation. The source code is decent as well, and at least doesn't short-change the C++ programmer - another disturbing trend in MS Press books.

I had the opportunity to work closely with Scott Roberts in Developer Support for Internet Explorer technologies while Internet Explorer 5 was in development. Scott was so expert in the use of the new technologies that they hired him to develop future versions. Scott's advice was essential while I was writing samples for the book. Pick up the MS Press book on XML, and along with "Programming Microsoft Internet Explorer 5," you'll have everything you need to develop mission-critical weblications using this incredible platform!

I read this and got the idea for "DHTML Desktop" Dynamic properties: You can have properties update based on push, not pull = less code. I had never heard of this elsewhere.

The cover of this book was shot in front of my building, 629 E. 5th St. in Manhattan, NYC. I'm pretty sure the kid in the background is me. I still have to contact Martha Cooper to confirm. Funny how when you're a child, you don't realize that the life around you is absolutely extraordinary. As I thumbed through the book and saw the very places I played in as a child, I couldn't help but think, wow, that's a lot of trash and junk. There were 16 tenement buildings when we moved there in 1969, and just 3 left when I left to the US Army in 1981. Most were burned down during the widespread arson that decimated NYC in the 70's. I can imagine how outsiders would look at us playing in what looked like a war zone and think, poor kids. But to us it was just one giant playground. I can't tell you how many tetanus shots I got as a kid due to having stepped on rusty nails or cut by rusty metal from abandoned stolen cars. I was thrilled to see that someone actually took the time to memorialize this era in the mostly Puerto Rican slum. It was my home and I learned a lot of life's lessons on those streets. Great peek into life I’m sure many nodded their heads to and thought that nothing good would come of this. Almost 50 years later, 3 great adult children, 2 grandchildren and a successful 32 year career of public service, I’m proof that there’s always hope in humanity where you go in the world.

I love this book so much, it brought back many memories, I lived through those times and believe it or not, it was fun; I grew up in the South Bronx. When you're a kid you don't pay attention too much to a lot of the negative things around you like the poverty, junk yards, burnt buildings and cars, garbage and danger, you just learn, survive, and live to see another day. As a kid you accept what you have and make the best of it; the main focus is on having fun and being free. Getting and staying outside was the main goal so we could spend time with our friends running around the niehborhood on crazy adventures till we heard our mothers calling us from the kitchen windows.This book, through the art of photography, lets everyone into an unfortunate era for innercity kids lives in New York City but at the same time some of their most memorable and fun times. I could still remember the fire hydrant in the summer times where we used cans as a preassurized spinkler systems and the junk yard club houses made from everything we could find, one house we made had red leather car seats. Then there was the jumping off of abandoned mac truck's onto a stack of mattresses and the climbing of fences; we used everything we could find and made it useful and fun, it was all in the imagination. I remmber going treasure hunting in the surrounding junk yard for used toys and any precious metals, once I found a bag of old coins from different countires. I wouldn't trade those days for nothing, could things have been better? Ofcourse. But thats the way it was, at the time we had no choice but to make the best of it and we did; we adapted to our environment. It's part of what made many of us who we are today.For those that made it out of the ghetto we became stronger, more resilient, wiser, more aware of our surroundings, intuitive, our imaginations grew, and we came to appreciate the smallest things in life. We learned to be content and happy with what we have, even though as adults we have so much more now. And cherished memories of when we were kids and things were good, no responsibilities, bills, and the innocence of youth, where eventhough things were really bad around us we focused on the positive and didn't care. Martha cooper captures these times with artistry and simplicity, the only thing I wished of this book was that there were more and more pictures, more kids and more niehborhoods. But, thats what we have our own memories for and with this book she helped bring many of those good ol memories back in the form of a beatiful book.The book has a happy and innocent feel to it not a depressing and morbid one,its like a kids book for adults. She did a really good job at capturing those moments moments in a positive and happy way. I remember talking about those times with family and friends throughout the years, so when I saw this book for the first time I went crazy. Finally, a book that captured those times vivedly and perfectly. Now we don't just have to describe it, we can show it. Buy the book you wil not be disppointed, I wish there were more books like this on the market.

Martha Cooper has restored my faded childhood memories of New York City (well at least parts of the city). Melle Mel's famous lyric "...It's like a jungle, sometimes it makes me wonder, how I keep from going under..." - these photos going along in a perfect melody of still photos...or something like that...I glad she had the opportunity and film to document this particular era in the city. The Lower East Side - Alphabet City has changed a lot. I have shown this book to the younger members of my family - they have taken more interest in how children grew up in those years. I hope Cooper publishes another book.Photo Journalism at its best!

Love Martha Cooper and the many black & white photographs in this book, the children are poor and have nothing but their imaginations & inventivenes keep smiles on their face, very similar to my own upbringing in the city.

As a child who grew up in Lower East Side during this period I appreciate the photographs. My how times have changed.Life is interesting. I remember the street play and had forgotten how financially poor I was. Too busy playing.
